I installed MySQL on Solaris 9/Sparc processor and didn't have too much problem with the installation or running the server. The only problem I encountered was some directory did not got created (/usr/local/mysql/share and /usr/local/mysql/data). After I manually created those directories and modify the group setting, everything ran perfect.

My recommedation is to run a test script ./opt/mysql/mysql/mysql-test/mysql-test-run.pl after you completed your server installation. Then the same comment posted by Bill.

execute the server from /etc/init.d/mysql start
