Thank you for the reply. Unfortunately, the problem seems to be worse than this.

I tried a complete reinstall of all the MySQL components and deliberately did not ask the installer to create a MySQL instance because this failed last time. This all seemed to work except that the tutorial installation failed with the message that it could not find an instance of MySQL, which is understandable.

Now, however, when in the Workbench, I am unable to create any instances of MySQL. It simply says it has failed with no error code or additional information.

I am struggling to know where to go with this. The machine is about as standard as it is possible for a PC to be, with no 'exotic' software of any description on it. It does have Norton, but disabling the firewall on this has no effect.
