Installing as server machine on a typical desktop

I'm about to install Mysql on a new pc. Its a regular PC intended for all my work (website development, photoshop work, video editing etc..). Up till now I had mysql installed as a developer machine but the low performance compared to VPS hosting accounts always bugged me.

I'm thinking of installing mysql as a server machine to get better performance. I understand I may have to keep other open applications at minimum while I do website development, and when I don't I intend to turn off the mysql service to free up the resources.

Hope any of you guys have some experience with such configuration. Should I try this or should I just stick with the developer machine setup?

TIA
