Can't create db after install

Hello,

I've just installed 5.6.12, 32bit on a Mac mini running 10.6.8. The install goes fine. I start the server using the commands in the read me file. I type SHOW DATABASES and I see 'information_schema' and 'test', but not 'mySQL'. It's my understanding that the mySQL db holds passwords and such. If I try to use the CREATE command to create a new db I get the error msg: ERROR 1044 (42000): Access denied for user ''@'localhost' to database 'tester'. Is this because of the missing db? If so, how do I create the missing db. If not, what is the problem?
