Hi Peter,
at the end I figured out what was the problem.
Apparently the new installation of MySQL remembers the last server instance name used (as registered in Windows) and tries to use that one, even if you have deleted everything (and of course also the server sevice).
The solution is to delete the server instance from the Workbench and create a new one. This way MySQL uses the correct server service.
