One more update. This works with the MAMP download - I don't need Bitmnami. The MAMP stack doesn't have the 'my.cnf' file but it isn't needed. I used the 'GRANT ALL' command but with the IP address for my iMac on my local network (192.168.0.xx). When I connected from Parallels, the link was fine.
