Was the previous install also in the MySQL 5.6 series?
I want to guess that there's an option in your configuration file that has changed/been removed from 5.6, and is preventing the server from starting.
Via command line is the easiest way to debug:
# /usr/local/bin/mysql/bin/mysqld --help --verbose
This parses all config files, so any problems should be displayed on screen.
