mysql will not start, myslq.sock is missing

Centos 7 mysql
everything was working fine until server needed hard reboot.
when I try to login into myslq I get this error:
ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)
mysql.sock is missing and doesn't exist on the server?
