ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (2)

I'm currently running MySql Community Version 5.6 and every time I try to start mysql with the command:

$mysql start

I receive:
ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (2)

Any help would be much appreciated!!!
