Thanks Frank - yours is the one that worked for me !!!!

1. download MySQL Admin
2. Startup Variables - security - Use Old Passwords
3. Restart MySQL Service
4. backinto MySQL Admin
5. reset your root password (I had proplems with certain number char combinations)
6. Restart MySQL admin
