The package you downloaded is a binary release. Get the source release here: http://dev.mysql.com/get/Downloads/MySQL-5.1/mysql-5.1.41.tar.gz/from/http://mysql.he.net/

The hivelogic tutorial was not enough for me, though - I can't get the resultant binary to pass the tests ("make test"). I wish that whoever compiles the official MySql binaries would just post the compile command that they use. That would solve this problem and make all the hundreds of "here's the right way to compile MySql for OS X" pages unnecessary in one fell swoop.

Good luck,

Erick

P.S. You can also install macports (macports.org) and then have it install mysql5-devel. I'm not doing that, because the way macports installs mysql annoys me, but it's a great alternative if you're less persnickety than me.
