Event Scheduler will not start automatically

MySQL Ver. 5.1.33 Community

Although it can be started from the console with SET GLOBAL event_scheduler = ON; I can not turn on the event scheduler with my.ini or my.cfg entries. This is very problematic, since any restart of mysql will turn the event scheduler off!

Under the [mysqld] heading I have tried:

event_scheduler=ON
event_scheduler= ON
event_scheduler=1
event_scheduler= 1

(I don't know if the space after "=" should matter.)

I have tried it in the my.ini and my.cfg files and made sure they were the configuration files my system is using.

Since SET GLOBAL event_scheduler = ON; from the console does work, event_scheduler must be enabled already.

Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?

A solution is need so we can implement a large project, so your help is much appreciated!
