Certainly adding joins to a query is going to increase overhead. The impact can be a little or a lot, depending on a number of factures, particularly indexes available to help the join process. I would start by indexing all the fields used in the join conditions, then do an EXPLAIN to see if there is any additional tunining that can be done.
