We've used Dezign (http://www.datanamic.com/dezign/whatsnew.html) for years. Small, effective, inexpensive, but not near Rational Rose in capability.

These days we are looking at the Toad Data Modeler (http://www.toadsoft.com/toaddm/toad_data_modeler.htm). So far we like the freeware version. Whether we will like it enough to buy the commercial version for nearly $500 is another question, but we think its free-vs-commercial feature list (http://www.casestudio.com/enu/features.aspx) is an excellent basis for what one should expect from a data modeller shipping in 2007-8.

It's too early to say how comparable MySQL WorkBench will be.
