use ~/.my.cnf for database credentials when connecting via SSH

Im' trying to use Workbench to connect to remote servers via SSH. This works, except it doesn't seem to read the database user/password from ~/.my.cnf on the target machine. Is there any way to get this to work? I fail to see the need to manually enter the user/password that I don't actually know (but obviously could read from the .my.cnf).
