Will, I'm sorry, but I can only help you with the WB side of the process. For help with OpenOffice ask in their forums.

I haven't used data import like that in OO but from Excel I know you can run queries via ODBC to get data. MySQL has an ODBC driver as well, so maybe this is a more direct solution instead first dumping the data to a text file.
