Cannot view error log in workbench

I cannot see the error logs in MySQL-WB.
I have a correct ssh connection in WB
The file mentioned in Management->Server Status is correct is is filled with log-messages
logging is enabled.
Usimg the same credetials with a normal ssh connetion (putty) I can access the file.
The wriitten file is defined trough my.cnf.
And still i get:
"unexpected error creating log reader: [Errno 2] Np such file or directory: 'var/lib/mysql/.'
This name is not changed after a changede the err-logfilename, restarted mysql and verify the new file is being written by mysql

What's wrong here?
