Jeff,

I'm running MySQL Workbench on Yosemite as well and don't see this (though it's not a clean OS install). WB has a log file which may help identifying the problem you see. So, start up WB and open the log folder via the Help menu. Then open a connection. When it hangs take a look at wb.log if you see errors there.
