Help with database corruption

I am new here and not sure if this is the right place for this post.

Last week our database got corrupt and automatically restored to a version of few hours back. We guess about 12 hrs back version. In this version, all tables were restored perfectly just missing the activity of these 12 hrs but one table was truncate. It was about 500MB and was truncated to about 300MB removing the later records.

We think it could be our efforts to take database backups before starting a major upgrade. We tried to create a copy of database from phpmyadmin. It was taking long time so closed the browser window. We also ran mysqldump command from SSH. But it stopped in between. After few hours after seeing a lot of load on mysql, we killed the mysql processes (4 of them) from SSH.

Can you please tell us your views about this incident? Is this possible for the database to restore to an older version automatically? If yes, what do you recommend to stop this in future? What could have happened as per you?

Thanks in advance for all your help.
