Installing MySQL Data Directory to UNC location

I am installing Mysql version 5.6.22 and want to point the data directory via the my.ini file to store the data directory to an alternate network location. Can this be done? I am installing the mysql service on a windows 2012 R2 operating system. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
