installer will not open

Hi,
I have installed the MySQL Installer for Windows on my Win 8.1 x64 machine. Initially I did this without a problem, however, the SQL server that I thought I had installed appears not to have installed correctly (it's not listed under the Services, and it won't start from MySQL Workbench).
However, I cannot open up the MySQL installer. It tries to launch, bu then comes up with an error dialog which says:
"internal error. (Value cannot be null. Parameter name: path 1) The installer will now close"
I have tried uninstalling and then reinstalling the installer, to no avail. I really need to install the MySQL server so that I can use the MySQL workbench (which otherwise appears to work fine). Can anyone please help?
