Connecting to MySql form excel

Hi guys,
I've just starting using Google Cloud SQL.
Connecting MySql Workbench via hostname="specific IP", username="root" and password="my password" was a breeze.
No I would like to use my data from excel (and later on pivoting and making graphs). If I enter the same credentials, I get a prompt that "Using method mysql_native_password failed with message. acces denied for user root@..."
Why is connecting via Workbench different to a MySql database then via Excel?
