I uninstalled everything as you said. Had a problem trying to understand how to install the 4.1.8a version so I persevered with the installation and reinstalled the mysql-4.1.8-win. I did a custom installation and installed it in c:\mysql tested it on the command line. Created a database.
I then installed the latest mysql administrator and it did not crash. I created a table using the administrator and it worked ok.
On to the next steps now to see if the rest is working ok.
