Tinyint(1) goes to Boolean(Logical)

Hi there

I have at home a mysql 4.0.15-nt running and at my desk a 4.0.11-gamma version
I observed something strange with my mysql server at work
It transforms the tinyint fields in boolean and this mess up my code
My application written in java expects a number, instead it gets a string
Is this a bug or a known feature of some versions?
If its known stuff where can i found out which are the versions with this thing?
Can i disable this thing?

Thanks

Excuse me for my english
