Getting better error messages?

I've just installed 4.1.9 (up from 4.0) and am trying to make a subquery work. It looks okay to me, but the parser disagrees. Unfortunately, its error message is a lot like the notorious error messages that C compilers used to give ('you have an error near....').
Is there some way to get more helpful error messages? The parser obviously knows where it failed and why it became too confused to carry on.
