MySQL support for semistructured data

I would like to know whether (any version of) MySQL supports (stores, retrieves, updates) semistructured data.

Does MySQL support semistructured data?
Can XML documents be stored efficiently (neither as plain text documents, nor as relational data)?

If yes, where can I find more related info.
