How optimized are [older] stock MySQL binaries?

My company is currently using MySQL version 3.23.51 on a variety of Intel Hardware. Are the binaries that MySQL AB distributes for this (older) version also compiled with the Intel C++ 8.0 compiler (as inferred elsewhere on the mysql.com site) so that MySQL will run most efficiently on the latest Intel Hardware, or were they built using gcc with more "generic" options to allow it to run on a variety of x86 processors (including AMD), therefore resulting in slightly less than optimal performance on Intel hardware (Pentium4, Prescott and Nocona processors) as is claimed (allegedly as much as 42% more efficient)? What I'm getting at is, would it be worthwhile to download and recompile the MySQL source with the Intel C++ 8.0 Compiler with the appropriate options as recommend to achieve maximum performance on Intel Hardware, or are these binaries (the older as well as newer versions) already built/optimized for that?

Does anyone here know?
