If "active" means "queries within a given period", you could enable the general log (http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.6/en/query-log.html). It will have a small effect on performance. Though that page fails to say so, you can use the GLOBAL log_output variable to set general log output to TABLE, making the general log accessible to ordinary queries.
