Very large .MYD files created in /tmp

We are running a select statement with a group by on a large MyISAM table (the .MYD file is 447M). We understand that this may require the use of a temporary table on disk, but the query needs to be done. I have seen the .MYD and .MYI files being created on /tmp. However, what I don't understand is why the file grows to 24G or more, when the base data file for the table is 447M. Can anyone please explain this to me?

Thank you,
Barb
