4.0.21 upgrade to 5.7 on OS X

Hi,
New to all this. Upgrading a Mac with MySQL. Currently on G4/10.3.9/ MySQL 4.0.21-standard. Trying to go to Mac Mini/10.8.4 with current version of MySQL. However, the backup and restore fails. Got an error line that did not make sense, and I had to try to create the tables manually. Probably got that wrong. So I thought I'd do an upgrade path, (upgrade OS, upgrade MySQL, etc) incrementally, but I'm chasing my own tail. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
