MySQL will not start with "gtid-mode = ON"

I have just performed a clean upgrade by folowing the upgrade path from 5.1 to 5.6 to 5.6.14. The main reason for the upgrade is to take advantage of the GTID and replication features.

When I have "gtid-mode = ON" in my .cnf file MySQL fails to start with the following error: "The server quit without updating PID file". If i disable GTID mysql starts up fine and the db funcions properly.

Am I missing something??

running on ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS

thanks!
