Symbolic links and MySQL with Windows 7

I used .sym files to connect to databases on another drive very successfully with WinXP. Now I have Windows 7, I cannot get it to work.
- If I use the same .sym file I used with WinXP and try to connect with the Command Line Client, it says Error 1049 "unknown database"
- If I create a Windows 7 symbolic link with MKLINK, it connects OK, but says there are no tables if I do a "Show Tables".
- If I connect to a local copy of the remote database, all is well.

Has anyone successfully linked to a database elsewhere with Windows 7?

thanks

Ian
