After much searching, finally found the recommended ODBC configuration for Access. Enabled Dynamic Cursors and the Return Matched Rows instead of Affected Row. Problem fixed, the bitflip no longer needed. Not easy to find these settings!
If anyone else with experience with this setup has other configuration setting recommendations please let me know.
