Hi,

This is a documented limitation:
http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.7/en/rename-table.html
"When you execute RENAME TABLE, you cannot have any locked tables or active transactions."

There is an open feature request about removing this limitation.

We are currently evaluating how we can best lift this limitation.
