I was using 'gnu tar -chZf' to back it up since the database had logbin on. Perhaps the gnu tar has some problem. I know a regular tar should work fine but I didn't want to have another 250GB tarball laying around (as space is limited so I had to either pipe it to compress or have an easier method to zip it on the fly) The high cpu consumption came from the tar command after running for an hour or so.
