thanks for the info. Now it is quite clear.

Unfortunately, the result is that none of my ideas apply to your problem. You don't have a Linux kernel that I know of having problems. You don't use temporary tables. Your key cache is small and not even used much. Hence, I can't say that you do anything wrong.

Since ps shows that mysqld grows in memory size, it is quite probably a bug. If you can make a somewhat repeatable test case, please report the bug at bugs.mysql.com.
