Blob columns (fields) are dynamic in size. You do not waste space when inserting a small amount of data.

But. The different blob sizes have a different size of the length specifier. You may waste a couple of bytes per row if you specify a too big blob type. See: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/storage-requirements.html
