key_buffer -- no such variable
key_buffer_size -- ok
This is the InnoDB forum, but you don't list innodb_buffer_pool_size; what was it set to?

Does the operating system have some limit (explicit or default) on how much RAM a process is allowed to have? FreeBSD, for example, defaults to 512MB, which us usually felt in disallowing you to reach Max_connections.
