You can't get any faster than the C interface; all interfaces [I think] are derived from it. C++ has virtually no overhead over C.
Locking is semantically required, you can't avoid it.
Please show your SHOW CREATE TABLE and some sample queries. I suspect there is something missing in what you have told us.
