thanks Scott. but i can't help thinking its got to be somehow possible, at a lower level at least.
unfortunately dump-restore is a deadly option for me. this restore took a day almost and my boss will kill me if i ask him to let me do it again just because i let the test dbname be in the dump and thought i would rename it later when restored.

i was thinking along the lines of symlinks etc..
also u knw i think its at a mapping level in the .frm files (with the table space )..
i tried hexdump to read it but couldn't understand anything..
