Doing _anything_ with _all_ of 288G will take hours. Disk drives are that slow. The slowness have very little to do with MySQL.

That being said, there may be other workarounds...
Please provide SHOW CREATE TABLE.
What is the goal of "compression"? OK, to make it smaller; but why?
Which compression techniques have you tried?
