2GB of memory is tiny by today's standards.

What Operating System are you running? Does it have a limit on how much memory to give each process? (Apparently it does.) How can that limit be raised?

Or...

Let's see my.cnf; maybe something is set too high.

(Yes, MySQL will run in 2GB, but it may take some tuning.)
