I have a total of 24GB memory, 7GB used if I check the windows task manager.
mysqld process uses less than 1GB memory. It's a dev box, not much activity on it.

The total disk size of the database containing the tables is about 5GB; there are other databases in the one mysql instance, the total database size is 12GB. No activity on the other databases when I tried to add the column to the tables.

The system dirve has 180GB free disk, the disk containing the mysql database has 200GB free disk.
