Running "MySQL 5.6.14 32-bit" means that mysql _cannot_ use more than 4GB (2^32) of RAM.
Anyway, nothing you have said so far explains why ADD COLUMN should fail in any way. It might be slow, but not fail.
If possible, upgrade to a 64-bit MySQL.
I could look through the rest of the settings if you provide
SHOW VARIABLES;
SHOW GLOBAL STATUS;
(You might need something like pastebin.com to provide such bulky stuff.)
