I don't appear to have that parameter in my ini file but just read this link below and it seems it is ON by default in 5.7 Probably not good news ?

I do have a full back yes. A Data folder from the original 5.6

Do you happen to know if it is possible to use mySQL without innodb ?

Do you happen to know if innodb cab be rebuilt ? although I haven't been able to find anything that suggests it can be.

You mentioned "backdoor" method. Unfortunately my experience is with MSSQL where there is no need to worry about external indexes etc so I guess I misunderstood the complexities of mySQL databases.
