Just to say that I'm not teccie enough to handle or understand how to install MySQL, so I hope someone else will answer.

What I can say is that you may find that the "limited" GIS functions in 5.1.35 are enough for you. That's what I'm finding. For example, although contains() is only an MBR function, you can use distance() to identify whether x contains y. As you can see elsewhere, I can't get distance() to handle the antimeridian, but perhaps that's no a problem for you or perhaps you can get around it.
