MySQL rand() is slow on large datasets

I love mysql because of its ease and performance wide. But when it comes to rand() on large datasets (with more than 100k rows) the query dramatically slows down the server and performance is way too bad.
Are mysql engineers doing something about this? Is there any good workaround? I am using mysql with php and thinking of pulling about 10 rows randomly from the table.
Thanks :)
