Rich,

the initial configuration is the hard part. MySQL comes with several config files for small, large, huge servers. Check your installation directory for these files. The default work quite fine for a large number of setups.

The real work is understanding the parameters. This requires a general understanding of databases in general and MySQL in particular. Without that background knowledge performance tuning will always be like Vodoo magic.
