wait_timeout

Hi guys!

I was wondering are there any recomendations for setting wait_timeout
on a very busy database server (consider thousands of connections per
second issued from several web servers)?
I personally find it very fine setting very small (like 5 seconds) wait_timeout
(consider the rest of mysql params are properly tuned).

Can someone cover technical backgrounds of such optimization? What results
can be reached when further playing with http keepalive timeout, usage of
persistent connections? What benefits would migration to Apache2 bring (Apache
1.3 is being used at the moment)?
(consider generic LAMP environment).

Thanks.
