Thanks for the indepth response. It makes sense and I was glad to discover we aren't using pconnect at all. I'm still leaning towards OS problems but that's because I haven't researched it yet. Something went on over the weekend and I'm slogging thru the slow_query_log to see if it'll shed light on something (already has but I'm sure there's more in that huge log).
